| Guidelines for Writing a Book Review |
The Frank McGuire Foundation's mission is recognizing and promoting greatness in high school coaching. There are many ways we strive to accomplish this, one of them being the establishment of an "online reference library" from which high school coaches, as well athletes and parents of athletes, can benefit. A great high school coach needs to be an excellent motivator, a skilled negotiator, both a tactician and strategist, and almost an expert on many social, psychological and physiological issues. That's a heavy load. It is also why we are looking to support high school coaches by reviewing books and video tapes that can help them become better motivators, managers and practitioners. You can help by submitting a review of a book that relates to the issues that high school coaches face. There are several aspects that we look for in a book review. First the basics: for starters, keep it to 500 to 750 words. Either send us a copy of the book or a scanned image of the front cover. If you do the latter, make sure you give us all the publisher's information, including the ISBN number, a 10 digit number usually printed in the first several pages of the book or near the bar code on the back cover. When writing the review, describe your impression of the book and how it relates to you, and how it may relate to the world of youth sports in general and specifically towards high school coaching. This is very important - relate the book to how it could benefit a high school coach. A book about a great professional coach like Bill Belichick has lessons for the high school coach, for the student athlete and for the parents of student athletes. Tease this out a bit, without spoiling the experience for the reader of the review who will hopefully be inspired enough to get the book and read it. Finally, it is probably a lot easier to review a book that you truly enjoyed. If you didn't care for it, or if you can't relate it to the high school coach, don't force it. We'll wait for your next great read. Send your completed reviews, any graphics and/or the book to the Frank McGuire Foundation office at 180 Central Park South, NY. (See contact info at www.mcguirefoundation.org). Thanks for your help and for your continuing support of the Frank McGuire Foundation. |
